very interesting philosophical look at lady gaga, hook-up culture, stuff like that in this article.

  1. That's one of the more nuanced analyses (analysises?) I've read about "hook up culture", etc. Usually peeps just wanna be like, "Girls pretend like they want to be slutty, but inside they are yearning for the gentle touch of a young man who opens doors for them!"
It's such a complicated thing, and I think maybe the search for right and wrong in the whole dealio is just futile. Except, if Lady Gaga is wrong, then I don't wanna be right.

  3. yeah, i thought it was good too. hook-up culture is opaque to women who didn't grow up in it, and maybe the analysis should start and end there.

was listening to the dan savage podcast the other day, and this young woman (23) called in to ask how she could really wow this guy in bed that had recently been single and that she was competing for with three other women. the thing dan commented on, and that i agreed with, was that she was only concerned with the young man's enjoyment, not her own. that's not liberated or liberating. maybe in those kinds of situations hook-ups aren't serving the purpose they're supposed to serve.

or maybe they don't serve any purpose at all? ok, it's an opaque phenomenon to me. my response starts and ends there.
